Elders Advisory Group

HISTORICAL:

In the past, Kina Gbezhgomi Child and Family Services became one of a number of Native controlled agencies developed across Canada in response to a political outcry by Native people. The intent of establishing Kina Gbezhgomi was to create a cultural-specific organization emphasizing a Native approach to child welfare.

PURPOSE:

The sacred responsibility for developing and sustaining our families takes us back into the past to prepare ourselves for the future. The concepts, principles, the values practiced by our Anishinaabe people in the past are the strengths we now need to encourage and ensure healthy families, which in turn will be the foundation of strong and healthy communities.

GOAL:

The overall goal of Kina Gbezhgomi Child and Family Services is to protect, respect, and keep our children with us in each of our First Nation communities. This goal challenges us all to:

  • nourish the values and principles of our Anishinaabek people;
  • draw our strength from the people that we serve;
  • develop and identify human resources at the community level to assist and deal with child welfare issues in the community.

ELDERS ADVISORY GROUP

Kina Gbezhgomi extends its appreciation to the UCCM elders for their guidance and assistance within this area.
