Kina Gbezhgomi Child and Family Services is a non-profit, aboriginal child and family service organization servicing seven First Nation communities in the District of Manitoulin Island.

Kina Gbezhgomi has “Agency Status” with the Ministry of Child and Youth Services and as such provides services under Part II of the Child and Family Services Act (Voluntary Services.)

The task of assisting children and families has been entrusted to Kina Gbezhgomi by the United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin and the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve.

It takes a whole community to raise a child.

What does this statement mean to you?



Traditionally, our people have practiced this way of living without thought or question. It was a natural process.

Even as it exits today, we as an Anishinabe” Nation, have a large number of extended families. We have aunties, uncles, cousins and others we consider family members.

In the past, there was no need for the Children’s Aid Society, we took care of each other, we helped one another – we helped raise each other’s children.


In our society now, we can still practice this natural way of living. We must take it upon ourselves to help one another to raise our children.

We don’t necessarily have to call the Children’s Aid Society at each and every circumstance unless the children are in immediate need of protection. We must use our own judgment. We can do prevention on our own; we have extended family and services within our community. There may be situations that we can assist, ways in which we can help each other. Remember, it takes a whole community to raise a child.

Our children are our most valuable resource. They are the keepers of our traditions, language, values and customs; they are our future.
